Many normal hearing people believe that hearing aids can do the impossible: perfectly correct a hearing loss the way glasses or contacts can correct poor vision. If I ask for a repeat because I wasn’t able to lipread a sentence, the uninitiated will often say, “Cindy, don’t you have your hearing aids in?”
I usually reply, “Yes, I do.”
“But why didn’t you understand me earlier?”
Sigh. Makes me want to create some handy-dandy wallet-sized cards that say:
I’m so glad you asked about my hearing aids!
Yes:
- I’m wearing my hearing aids.
- My hearing aids are working.
- My hearing aid batteries are working.
- I am listening.
HEARING AIDS WILL NOT GIVE ME NORMAL HEARING.
But that would be mean. Or would it?
